Nope, not necessarily uncommon. There are many species of crawfish, though I can't ever I.D. them. That particular species may not be common, but the coloration I've seen before quite a bit.
Different species are usually present in larger numbers in certain parts of waterways. One part of a river may have just plain brown crawdads, another part may have some very colorful ones.
I had one at one time that was bright right with bluish claws and legs and speckles all over him, but unfortunately he got out of the tank. The fate of many of my crawdads :irked:
Make sure your tank is sealed or there's nothing for him to climb on.
