Hey guys, I was looking for a bullhead for my 75 (I know I change my mind all the time, don't lecture me please) and my LFS's main source is Segrest Farms. I figure they have no natives but channel cats so just thought I would stare at pics of them knowing I can't have one. So I went to the catalog and typed in "Ictalurus" and most of the results were channels. But then I look down at the bottom and see something labeled as "Midnight Catfish". There was no picture but the scientific name was listed as "Ictalurus nebulosus". That made me think so I went to PC and looked up brown bullhead and one of its many synonyms for its scientific name was none other than "Ictalurus nebulosus". I also remembered a while back that my other LFS had a fish for a while labeled as "Marble Catfish" that they said a customer traded in. Any educated person on natives could tell it was a brown bullhead (the florida strain since it was black with white spots).

So now put it all together: Some LFS bought a brown bullhead labeled as "Midnight Catfish". And it was labeled as that because the pattern on Florida Brown Bullheads looks like a night sky full of stars!

And BOOM, I just cracked that secret open. Segrest probably mislabeled on purpose so they don't need to buy a permit to sell natives in addition to selling such a common fish as a rare, exotic, and tropical one. And it's so easy for them to get because their headquarters are in Florida!

I rest my case.

Also, should I get one for my 75, I might risk buying one off them just because....I like US natives :)

So if anybody trusts my problem solving skills and wants a brown bullhead then just go to your LFS and ask for them to order a "Midnight Catfish" from segrest farms. I will probably do that.

Or... go fishing and get some.

I would if it weren't for the risk of bringing in disease. And bullheads don't spawn until early summer and or even start to bite much until mid April where I live and I'm needing the cat in 2 weeks give or take a day. I'll probably do it, just hope it doesn't outgrow my tank to quick :)

Here guys, I took a screen shot of the search so you know I'm not AS insane.
