I would like to get a Hystrix Stingray or two for my 180 gallon tank. I heard they are harder to keep than Motoro's. Is this true? I know they stay significantly smaller which is good for my tank.

Would a male Motoro do ok in my tank?

Thanks!

A 180 would be fine for a pair of hystrix, provided the filtration is adequate.

A fellow member kept his group of six hystrix in a 180 long term and had success with breeding them.

180g is to small.

That's incredibly irresponsible.

180 is fine for a hystrix. if you want a pair you can try, but upgrade!

A hystrix gets up to, or slightly larger than 12 inches across the disk. Including the tail, 180 gallon is quite small for a hystrix. If it is a wide 5' 180 then it would be fine. Nut a 6' by 2' would be to small IMO.

The tank is a 6' x 2' 180. In my opinion it is too small for a female Motoro and possibly too small for a male Motoro long term but no way is it too small for any Hystrix. Would extra width be better?-Sure it would but I am not upgrading any time in the next few years. One day I am going to make a 6' x 12' ray tank but until then I am keeping my 180 running as my biggest tank. Yes, the filtration is adequate. It has a 75 gallon diy wet/dry/refugium I made. The tank currently houses a group of 6 Caribe Piranhas ranging from 7"-11" which will likely be sold soon.

I was mainly looking to see how hardy they are? Do they eat well? Are they more prone to diseases compared to Motoro's? etc.

I haven't had any trouble with my 5 hystrix, had them about 4 months. They have been blackworm pigs and are starting to come around to eating whole nightcrawlers.

They are in a 6'x2' right now but they will be getting moved to my 6'x6' tank once they are over 7-8". I had a few 10" rays in a 6'x2' for a while, I felt bad for them.

Can a hystrix survive in a 6'x2' for life, yes, is it a good life, no. Rays like to have space to swim, at 12" in a 6'x2' they don't have much room to maneuver.
