I currently have a 100 gal tank with 350gph hob bio wheel, a 200gph hob bio wheel and a 150 hob (not bio wheel) and am currenly spending 30 bucks a week on filters.
I was thinking about getting a fluval canister filter to replace my HOBs but am not shure if spending the 200 buck will really pay off in the long run.
does anybody that use these know how much they spend on filters and can tell me if it will be worth it?
also if there is other brands that work better let me know.

The only thing I replace are the fine grade filter pads on seven canister filters and a sump. I buy a big sheet for twenty bucks and cut it to fit the different ones. It lasts a couple of months. So, I guess I spend five or ten bucks a month on filter media. Running carbon continuously doesn't make sense, anyway -- if there's nothing you're trying to remove, then there's no reason to pay for carbon to remove nothing. May as well use biological media in that space, instead. If you're going to go with HOB, then I agree that AquaClears are the best way to go -- all media comes in the box, and there's nothing to replace.

I would go with canisters myself. I think it gives the tank a cleaner look personalyl and you can stuff more media in a canister if you buy the right one.

^ yes fluval is a good brand. ehiem is a comparable brand for canister filters. but if you do go with a HOB go for Aqua Clears. they are the BEST lol

i don't care what u do as long u ditch the bio wheels... they are not even on the same playing field when put against AC's and canister filters.

i suggest a fluval FX 5 and an Ac 110..

= $1560/year!!!

u could buy almost 4 FX 5s for that amount.. and never have to spend money each week ever again..

on a 100 gallon ... that's just... uhhhhhhh!!!! i actually yelled when i read that.

why the hell do you need to spend 30 a week on filters anyway? im running like 5 HOB and a canister and i dont even spend that much a week.
