Most of ya have seen my Over the tank Sump http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=331508, but I'm thinking of improving on my methods. I'm thinking of taking an actual 10g Sump and using my HOB pump from the last idea and having it pump the water into the top of an actual sump. Thus maximizing the bio-filtration effect of the bio-balls by getting it to rain on them instead of 1/2 submerged, 1/2 recirculated condensation.

Question is, can I attach a tube to the intake tube of the old HOB pump and extend how far I can place it above the water line with minimal flow consequences? Or should I just use the Little Giant 700gph external pump and see about getting that to play nice? I'm trying to avoid the big pump because of noise. Its not much noise, but both my tanks are in my living living room where I watch TV, so noise is a concern.

When doing water changes my AC filters stay pumping with the water 12"+ below the normal water level.
I'm not sure if it would pick up prime from that far below, never tried.
Give it a shot the worst that can happen is it wont work.

Agreed experimentation is te heart of diy. It is my second favorite part of diy. First is a working finished product. :)

Just an update. Tried it and it did not work. Too much tube it seems. Even submersing the old HOB pump, with the tube that long, it did not pump. I'm not sure why the tube affects it so much... might be like when you try to breath through a garden hose its just too hard.

Next try will be with a submersible pump, but that might be a while.
