(Opps, wasnt paying attention and posted this in the wrong section)

I have a question about turning the flow down on my old Whisper 60's. These filters are on my 55 Con breeding tank. I have turned the flow down to as slow as they will go so they dont suck up any fry. My question is, does turning the flow down going to hurt the BB on the media? I obviously turning the down is going to reduce the mechanical filtration, but since the water is going by the media slower, is it going to reduce how well it biologically filters, since I am not turning the water over as fast? I have two Whisper 60's and an XP1 canister on the tank just so you know.

Back when I had whisper HOBs I only turned the flow down when I feed my fish.
It could cause strain on the motor overtime, im not sure. You might wanna try putting a pre filter over the intake first so you can keep the flow high an not suck up any fry.

Hope this helps.

Yeah I already covered the intakes with some nylon. I couldnt find any nylon till last night. I still have the filters turned down about 50% because if the fry get too close, they get stuck to the nylon while at max flow.

your filter/s an fry should be ok now then.

What kind of fru do you have in the tank?

Convict fry, this is the second batch.

How about picking up a Penguin Reverse flow kit for 6 bucks next time you make an online order and stick the prefilter over your intake? Less resistance than a regular sponge filter.

Example

The larger the sponge the less suction at the outside edge, and it's not going to clog like the nylon.

Fry will be able to eat from it too.

I actually found some "pond pump replacement filtera" labeled Garden Escapes made for 'Flow Rite pond pumps' by general foam Plastics Corp out of Norfork Virginia 23502, # 084-010027 RF36 @ Walmart a few months ago, 5.25" x 2.5" cylindrical, but they new replenished their stock since I bought them out. @ for $2.00 how could I resist?!

The more course the better.

I have used sponge filter from the intakes on my HOB's before but the only problem that I found with them is being fairly fine they reduced the HOB flow quite a bit. They also would grow algea like a muther and it was pretty difficult to clean it off.

Thanks for the links
