I thought of this just the other night, maybe this is a dumb question? Don't know till you ask I guess. Can you hook up a HOB or Canister Filter to the tube's from an under-gravel filter? Seems like it would add the effectiveness of your filteration. Am I right? I have some AC110's I would like to try it with, what do ya'll think? Thanks guys.

Used to do that with one of my old tanks. It's actually nicer if you connect the OUTLET of your canister to the undergravel filter. That way you keep a lot of mechanical waste from accumulating in the gravel, but you still get the massive bio filtration power of flowing through the gravel.

The only downside is that you lose any redundancy in your filtration. If your Canister or HOB pump eats it, there's no backup. At least if you have bubblers or powerheads running your ugf, it keeps working.

Your AC110 is already more effective than the UGF. The only thing connecting them would do is put a strain on the AC motor, and ruin a perfectly good filter.

Just about everything you've said there is comepletely dependent on the rest of his setup. In a large tank with a large UGF and decent diameter gravel what you've said is completely incorrect. In a small tank with sand as a substrate then you have a point.

I was going to try it with my 55 gallon, but I took it down...It would have been gravel...but I think I might try it with y next set-up like you said though...put my output to it, that makes more sense and might make the need for gravel vacuuming less needed, I hate gravel vacuuming!

The ac will provide more flow to both the mech and bio media making it more effective in both mechanical and biological filtration.
In fact, the UGF does absolutely nothing for mechanical filtration. That proves it more effective alone REGARDLESS of the rest of the set up.
If you remove the UGF all together, the AC110 will still take care of both mechanical and biological filtration. Can't say the same with the UGF.
Also, unless your substrate is large river rocks, it WILL reduce the flow of the intake, and strain the motor, ultimately shortening its life. Regardless if its an inch of gravel, or sand.
So again. The AC110 alone is more effective than the UGF.

I do it on a 10g. Using a 30-60 aquatech. It works, dont know if its any better. I did it because the 30-60 moves a lot of water, and i had a lazy betta that would get stuck to the inlet. Had same idea as you, solved betta problem.

I will say the hob, was restricted some by tthe setup, i recently used it to cycle my sump, and it had more flow, then it did in the 10.

For my son's betta tank, I attached a tiny whisper filter, instead of an air stone, to an underground filter, and it worked great.
Just getting around to constructing the same thing with 2 aquaclear 70s on my 75 gallon.
