Hi,

I am thinking of doing this for my 55g and 30g goldfish tanks and I would like to find out if it will work.

On my 55g I run 1 Emperor 400, 1 Aqueon 55 and 1 Whisper EX45. Now, I want to use the Whisper just for bio filtration and stuff it with scrubbies, Black Diamond carbon(like to use carbon) and Ehfisubstrat Pro.

On my 30g I run 1 Aqueon55 and 1 Emperor 400. I want to use the Aqueon just for bio filtration and stuff it the same as the Whisper, scrubbies, carbon and Ehfisubstrat Pro.

Good or bad ideas? Thank you.

I guess it must be a good idea since no one made any comments.:)

Why do you want the carbon in there? I would fill it with ceramic rings and call it a day.

I think carbon helps with the overall filtration. I will keep using it until I am convinced it does not help.:)

Unless you put a filtering media on the intake, be prepaired to do a bunch of cleaning or that "bio" media will be so full of gunk that it would add more nitrate than remove ammonia.

:ROFL:biomedia that produces nitrate without consuming ammonia :screwy:

If I put a piece of fluval foam on the bottom then poly fill follow by carbon and Ehfisubstrat Pro on top, it will work? How do you guys suggest on filling up this filter. It's plenty of room in there without the original cartridge. Since I already have this filter I would like to use it.

I am glad you had a big laugh.

The nitrates in my both tanks are always between 5 and 10. I was just asking for suggestions on how to best use this extra filter that I have. I run 2 goldfish planted tanks(55g and 30g) , water par are great, plants are healthy and growing. No fish died on me so far so I think I am not doing a bad job. Btw, I just got into this hobby at the end of August, 2009.
