I just got a HOB sump, cool item. Just trying to figure something out. First chamber fills and has a spillway into a three tray system with media ect. then it has a third section where the water fills and is pumped via powerhead with a hose back into the tank. My question is how do I get the siphon action to pull water from the tank into the first chamber to get the process started. It only came with a "J" shaped hose. I tried everything I know and cannot get it to work.

If it is like filling a HOB overflow, then this should work:

You have to fill the chamber in the filter first, then fill the j-tube by holding it upside-down underwater. The tricky part is getting the tube in place without losing the water. If you can use your hands to cover the ends that works, but you can also use plastic wrap and a rubber-band if need be.

Good luck and post some photos of this thing. Who is the manufacturer?

you should be able to put an airline tube inside the larger siphon tube. As you suck on the airline it should remove the air until the water raises enough and starts a poor siphon as its used more the air will work its way out.
