I have an acei ngara that has a drop jaw and I was certain she was holding for a little over a week, but today, when I fed the fish, I saw her suck in a few flakes. They were tiny flakes, and she didn't really open her mouth to do so, but still - I thought they didn't eat while holding. Maybe I was wrong and she's not holding?

My Alcolapia alcalicus females eat small bits while holding, it is thought that this may be a way of feeding fry that have outgrown their yolk sack, at least in the case of Alcolapia.

It depends on what kind of Cichlid you are breeding as seen in previous post some fish do eat small bits of food. While other types may not even actually be holding fry just gotta do your research.
