Hey guys my holding female has been in hiding as she is still in my community cichlid tank. I tried to catch her and had no luck about a cuple of weeks ago. She came out today and ate one pellet of food. Does this mean the eggs hatched? She still looks very chunky in the mouth area. Also what is the chance the fry survive?

Normally Females don't eat if holding fry in their mouth. Possibility most of the fry were picked off and a few may be hiding.
Holding females can eat. It depends a lot on the species and on how long they are already holding.
The most cichlids from lake Tanganyika eat small amounts of food while holding.
In lake Malawi cichlids this behaviour is not so common but some females eat in the last days of mouth brooding when given the chance. Meaning they don't have to hunt their food or scrape it from rocks.
