I have a 65 gallon grow out in my living room 36"x18"x24". My problem is this I can't seem to get the temp above 80F. I have two heaters a 200 watt jäger an d a 300 watt fluval which is why I can't understand what's going on. The ambient temp in the room is 71F and at night goes down to around 68F. It is on an outside wall so I recently cut a piece if 1" blue styrofoam insulation to size and stuck it to the glass on the side facing the wall , not sure yet if it's done any good as the temp hasn't climbed just holds strong at 80F. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance this has been a great source of frustration.

I would think just one of those heaters should be sufficient for that tank. Are you sure they are working properly and are located in a good flow of water from the filter?

Do you have a lid on the tank?

Are you sure your thermometer is accurate?

i've got a glass top on the tank, the fluval heater is brand new and the jager is less than a year old, the fluval is an E series with a digital display thats the reading i am basing it on

Do you have a glass or metal hang on thermometer to double check the temperature?

What are you using for filtration? Do you have good water flow past the heaters?

There is no way 500 watts of heaters could not heat 65 gallons of water to over 80F. You are running over 7.5 watts per gallon, which is a lot! My guess is that the thermastat on the Fluval is off. I would try using another thermometer to cross check your actual temperature. If that's not it, I would guess that one or perhaps even both of your heaters are defective. I had a 240G in a garage where temps were in the 50s at night and was able to maintain 80F with "only" 500 watts, so a 65 gallon should be no problem.

I agree. I use 1 300 watt jager to keep a 60 in my garage at 86 and it has no trouble at all even when ambient temp in the garage is in the 50's. check both to see if they are working. Check outlet, power strip, etc

I had 2 E300 on my 125 and later shelfed them for inline heaters, mainly for aesthetics. Since I had them and I needed a heater for my 20 I used 1 of them and mine does the same thing. I have no research to back this theory, but I know the manual says they aren't designed to heat the tank more than 10 degrees above the room temp and since they are not fully submersible I feel they may have a thermostat above the waterline which prevents the heater from heating the tank more than the said 10 degrees sort of a fail-safe to keep your fish from cooking.
