Ok i have read plenty of articles suggesting what causes hole in head and nobody seems to know the actual causes. I have two oscars that have pits around their head & gill plates. I don't feed them feeder fish & I keep the water parameters pristine. I have put hole in head guard in which doesn't seem to do anything. I belive that it is only suposed to kill the parasite that causes it. I have now started soaking their food in nourish vitamin and amino acid supplement hoping this will cause them to start healing. They don't seem to be getting much worse but none of their wounds seem to be healing. Any ideas what will make them regenerate and prevent this from happening again? The oscars are the only thing in the tank that have an issue.

Change water frequently (50% per week), feed top quality foods (Ocean Nutrition, Omega One), and avoid feeder fish.

What exactly is hole-in-head? ive heard of this a few times and most ppl say its from feeders as far as i know. if anyone knows pls let me know!

Had oscars for years and never really had any problems with hole in the head. Massive water changes along with feeding a wide variety of foods help. Carbon weither it really has anything to do with hole in the head, I stay away from in my oscar tanks anyways. I do notice once your Oscar gets it, it takes a while to heal an even then you might get a small reinfection again.

treat for 10 days with metro (buy bulk 100g for $13) at 1/4 tsp to 40 gallons. Keep the water clean and feed good foods.

From what i have learned... it is not easy to prevent... just seems like no matter how you try sooner or later this disease shows its ugly head... but i am sure there are some lucky oscars and lucky fishkeepers who succeed.. the main thing i suggest is to try and purchase oscars from reputable dealer.. babies that were spawned in good water and taken care of until sold are so much more likely to be hole in the head free through out their lives... and then water changes frequently of good quality water through out their life.. varied good diet.. no feeders... and try to give them a stress free environment with no overcrowding... as well as making sure the oscar is not picked on by another tank mate are all great examples of keeping them healthy..and hopefully hole in the head free for life..

Garlic. I was getting a pretty bad case of it last spring, I upped the water changes and it didn't help at all. Then I added fresh garlic to an already high quality diet and with in a few weeks it was almost completely healed up. Now you cant even tell they had it at all.
