Hey so evry once in a while my oscar has a mini freak out and rams himself into a rock or heater.... he usually nicks himself but heals up pretty quickly. This time the wounds slightly larger than usual. Is it another self inflicted wound or hih?

Tank is 65 Gallons with no tank mates and I just did a large water change. Didn't check water levels yet....

sorry for the crappy phone pic...

Looks like a wound but the pic quality is pretty bad. Do you test your water with a liquid test kit ? How high do nitrates get before wc?

Ye ill try for a better pic. I use liquid tests just don't use them as often as I should. I usually just do a weekly water change.

Do large wc every other day that should heal up quickly... once heal start testing your water so you know how high the nitrates are getting the weekly wc may not be enough but the only way youll know is by testing

I agree with jaws it does appear to be simply a (few) scales missing.
But this could be the entrance point for bacteria to take hold and start an infection such as HITH, especially because are oscars are so sensitive to it.
So I'd up the water change schedule, and vac with each change to prevent bacterial buildup in mulm and tackle any potential future infection.

You could also try adding purigen to one of your filters...I cant speak on how good it is but am going to use it on my new tank....every little bit helps
