how big a hole should be drilled in a 150 gal tank? Would a two half inch holes located at opposites sides of the tank be enough for enough to effectively filter the water? Thanks!:grinno:

I would say it depends on what you have in mind for filtration. It would really suck if you drilled, and then found out the holes weren't the right size for what you have...

Hole size has nothing to do with tank size. The size of a hole drilled into a tank depends on the size of bulkheads you use.

You really need to get your bulkhead fittings first so you are certain what size drill you will need for them to fit. A 1.25 inch bulkhead will be plenty for the drain to your filter and a .75 inch bulkhead will be more than enough for the return. I used the same size for both of mine but then used reducing bushings for the return plumbing.

If you are going to drill the bottom of the tank, make sure you only use schedule 80 bulkhead fittings. If you are drilling the back, you can use schedule 80 or 40. Sch 80 1.25 bulkhead fittings normally require a 2 3/8 inch hole but that varies by manufacturer. That is why you need to get the fittings first.

would a 1.5" bulkhead be enough to drain water onto the wet/dry? Im hoping to get the desired turn over rate. The tank is 150 gal and will house about 5 big central american cichlids.

Yes, that will be large enough. You will be able to get really good flow with that.

Without breaking out my calculator, you should be able to flow 1800 gallons per hour with 1.5" pipe.
