Holy crap guys! I might as well give up fish forever...

I finally found out the sex of my Jaguar Cichlid... It spawned/laid eggs yesterday, and got really angry when I approached her tank... I don't know if it's all the anger and energy spent trying to protect her eggs, or the fact that PetSmart told me to pretty much do a 75% water change and remove the eggs because they'll poison the tank, or what... But she got Ick...

I did another 25% water change and put in some Ick medication, and upped the water temp to 84-86F... Now, all of the sudden, its scared to death... Anytime I come near the tank, it scatters, it won't hardly eat, and it hides from anything...

I was sitting on my bed, playing MW2, turned to get a drink and it flipped out, and the tank is at the other end of the room!

It's also lost a bunch of its beautiful colors... here are some pics, I altered one to look what she looks like now... I would take a pic, but my camera is broken, and I don't want to spook her any more than she is...

I might as well flush it and buy a hamster...

75% WC .. for what??? i have never done a 755 w/c for anything ... all it does is stress out the fish .. w/c's are sooooooo over rated ... if you have proper filtration you really just need to top off and that is enough fresh water ...

when you mess with fish all the time . they get stressed out .. and that is what causes ick .. not dead eggs ..

Not the water change debate again. We do not know his usual maintenance. If we have to assume that his usual maintenance is less than 75% water change done on a weekly basis, naturally, the fish was stressed by the sudden change in the environment in which case, smaller water changes should have been done in several intervals to permit the fish to adapt properly to its changing environment.

The ich parasites have already established prior to this. Stress can trigger it to appear. In a way, this allowed you to detect the parasites which gives you fair warning to eliminate them completely. What ich med did you use? It takes only table salt (without yellow prussiate) to destroy these parasites. Treat with one teaspoon per gallon and add another set in the next 12 hours to total two teaspoons per gallon. Keep treatment for two weeks and do not forget to redose salt when you do water changes.

Do NOT flush the fish. That is totally inhumane.

true ... i was not trying to say that it was his fault and he is a bad fish keeper .. thats not the direction i was trying to go with it ... just that he might be a bit miss informed and need better guidance in how he keeps his fish ... as did i when i joined .. and since then, i have been able to make fish keeping the most simple and relaxing hobby i have ...

lol +100 with VRWC lmao, that comment would win, and yeah usually petsmart people dont know what they are talking about, and it probably got ich from you adding back in water that was too much colder than the tank water, and yeah ich meds are a total waste of money and put way to much unnecessary stress on the fish, just treat like lupin said and that will get rid of the ich, thats all i have ever had to do to treat it, and one thing lupin left out was to up the temp to like 85 during this time. unfertilized eggs will not poison the water, she will end up just eating them once they fungus over, and yeah always make sure to add back in the same temp water as whats in the tank and i do 50-70% changes every week and this temp fluctuation was the only time i ever got ich in my tank

For the record and for any new fishkeepers, this is wrong, and horrible advice. Topping off the water does not remove the nitrates, its called a water change for a reason.

This thread solidifies my belief that we need a "MOST RIDICULOUS COMMENT EVER ON MFK" sticky thread.

ok well you can come over and check out my 150 gal tank .. that i have not done a water change in 3 months and the water prams are great ..and fish and healthy and doing great as well.. and dats are stable 100% of the time ..

and to make this resolvent to this thread ..

i treat my water with prime before i add it to my tank...
i add 5-10 gal of water each week due to evaporation.
i control the feeding to control the waste in the tank.
i have 2 Fx5's both full of bio rings which i clean one every 6 months to keep the filter pads in good condition.
about once every 6 months i will do a nice little clean on the tank .. the cleaning is staggered to be between the filters ..
clean a filter .. wait 3 months clean the tank .. wait 3 months clean the other filter .. wait 3 months and clean the tank .. repeat ..

when i clean the tank i take about 20% of the water out so it gets a 20% w/c every 6 months and have no problems ..

i have no problem with people challenging me on how i keep my fish because its not the accepted norm in the fish world .. but you can also check my 75 gal and my 130 gal tanks as well and see my fish .. check my parameters and see how good my fish are doing

if you have any other questions you can ask ..

im not telling you this is the end all be all for how to keep fish ..

(PS ... i have jags who used to be really shy .. now they are active and out and about in the tank .. the thing that help me the best .. lights... the more then lights are off .. the more active and about the fish are .. )

Well, im not necesarily a bad fish keeper, just that these last couple of days has gone wrong... I usually do about a 20-30% water change a week... (My filter kinda sucks)

On each water change I use API Aquarium Salt (Freshwater), API Stresscoat+ (Only a little drop), and a dose of Top Fin Water Conditioner. Today i did another 25% water change with a full dose of QuICK Cure...

She lost her colors, and is very scared, i cant hardly move now... kinda wanting to sleep in the living room so i dont spook her in the night...

Also, i got my Jga like, 5-6 months ago, so its not afraid of the tank or anything... It used to recognise me and get really happy, now all it does is hide...
