Is peat (like the type you could buy in a huge bag at home depot) aquarium safe? I'm aware that it will significantly lower PH.

I need to build a large mound of dirt/dryish land, and I think building up the base out of rocks would be too heavy.

Open to other suggestions for materials! The guys at my LFS said I should build something out of plastic egg crating but that seems too flimsy.

Sorry to prematurely bump but I missed the edit window--

It would be great if somebody could let me know about this ASAP. I'm about to go out for happy hour, and the home depot is on the way home. I'd like to use my drunken mega-strength to haul a big bag of bog home.

I imagine the peat will be really dirty, so I could let it sit in water and leech for a while if that makes sense.

most peat has anti fungal chemicals in it.a guy on here used organic spaghgum moss and that sounded like it worked for him

Thanks! Saw this before going home and it probably would have saved me the trip but I think Home Depot was already closed. Do you know where to find that stuff?
