My dad told me that i could boil any kind of oak leaves and get the same result as black water extract. Is this true, how do i go about the process and does black water benefit aquarium fish in any way? Will the water stain much?

It's when tannins are released into the water from plant matter. Betta breeders use a certain kind of leaf (the name escapes me at the moment). Some people don't boil driftwood, and just rinse it. So making your own is fairly simple. And even accidental blackwater is still blackwater. lol

It makes the fish and tank feel more natural, rivers and streams are not perfectly clear like our tanks our, and it also breaks up aggression and dims lite naturally, and some extracts have certain minerals and such, my fav brand it microbe lift amazon extract

Alternatively you can use peat moss. I found some at lowes for 10$ for 3 cubic feet. It or organic growing and I've had used it in my tank for about 1 month. Also just let it soak a bit to remove some of the finer particulates and you'll be fine. I also only use a small handful at a time for my 38G.
