I use plumbers epxoy to make caves and overhangs w/lace rock. When I set up my new tank, I will be using the epoxy to attach small black/gray PVC fititings to the backsides of the caves and walls of rock.
 
Here's my driftwood "root ball" that I made from grapewood vines glued together with dowels.

It's been soaking in my pond for about four months on and off and still as solid as the day it was built.
 
Nah. The parts that rot fast are the younger vines. These are the 100+ year old vines that are closer to the root ball. They're as hard as rock.
