My brother said he'd be over this weekend to fix this, however it was rather cold last night so I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I've been in the DIY section of MFK enough to know that when it comes to finding a quick and easy solution (even non-fish related) MFK isn't a bad place to ask.

Anyways, came home to this - gotta love cats.

Most googling results in cutting metal and such and repairing it that way. However from me just looking at it, it doesn't appear metal was used in this section and just padding/plastic. I'll be the first to admit I don't have much experience with this type of thing but if told what materials to buy (so I don't go into the hardware store looking like a complete idiot woman) and a general explanation of how to go about it I figure I can do it myself.

Since it is a duct, duct tape!

Case closed.

wrap plastic wrap around it then use duct tape to hold it till somebody who knows what they are truly doing can come.

I thought of this but then thought about it - if really hot air is coming out from my furnace, and there is insulation exposed isn't that a fire hazard?

Did some more digging, and found that this type of duct is called flex (flexible) duct and found a pretty straight forward guide to fix a hole here (it's the second section). So this doesn't sound all that bad or hard and seems a lot safer - thoughts?

Couldn't you just purchase some type of metal ring for duct work at a home center? Take the ring and put it inside the hole and patch that with tape. Just a thought.

That's pretty much what the article I linked said (sorry the link doesn't show up all that well: http://suite101.com/article/how-to-repair-damaged-residential-hvac-ductwork-a338417). Basically I'm taking that hole and cutting it completely, cleaning up the shredded metal and plastic and taking a metal duct (after I measure what size I need) and fitting both the sides into it, duct taping it and then pulling over the insulation and plastic wrap back over and duct taping that.

Sorry didn't even read the link. It sounds like you have it all under control. Have fun. Wear some gloves with the insulation you will be touching. If you are anything like me that stuff loves sticking to me, not a fun time.
