Homemade blackwater

Takes more like a bushel of leaves to really get some tannins going, but if you can conjure up that much, it can work very well.

I have magnolia and maple trees in my yard that are not sprayed, some I soak for a long time, so go right in the tank.

They do break down over time are get a bit "dusty".

I use them in wild type Borneo betta tanks, and make a very natural habitat.

Boil some peat in a mesh bag is also a way to get some home made black water extract. Peat moss tea.

you can just add the leaves to the tank. I use catappa leaves in mine. when the snails finish off the leaf, it's time to add another one. the catappea leaves are about the size of my hand and I usually use 2-3 leaves at a time in a 55G. I put 8 in once and it was tea. I had to pull oyt most of the leaves and do a water change.
