For my treats I use (big batch for my babies)
1 lb tilapia
1/2 lb of krill and brine shrimp mixed
1 cup of freeze dried bloodwork
1 cup tubifex/blackworm mix
1 tablespoon spira per pound
And about 3 teaspoons of garlic powder.

My question (random as usual) is can elephant garlic be used instead of regular garlic?

would love to see others recipes as well! I know people have made balls of things. Previously mentioned on an older thread.

No clue about the elephant garlic, unfortunately not familiar with it. Is it more potent than regular garlic? What is elephant garlic used for? Do you have access to regular garlic?

Maybe check out some of the nutrition threads and stickies by RD.

S SteelNSorcery , Are you using gelatin as a binding agent or just freezing it together?
Adding any supplements or vitamins to the mix?

Fresh garlic is going to be way better then powdered. I used to use it when I had salt. I'd make a mix like you. Take fresh garlic and grate it then press it against a fine mesh sive to "juice" it much better for the fish. Powered is little more then flavor. As for elephant garlic I think it' just a larger form of garlic.

That's actually not true, in fact, quite the opposite.

The problem with fresh garlic is the terrestrial based oil, fish don't tend to do well assimilating oils found in terrestrial based plant matter. In fact there have been studies done on marine species that were fed a fresh garlic mix in a feed trial that caused liver damage among the test subjects. Numerous studies with freshwater species fed terrestrial based plant matter have had the same results. I have been feeding pellets that contain garlic for approx. 15 yrs, but it's a small inclusion rate and in a dry form. (no oil)

Good info to have. About 15 years late for me though....lol I had read and always been told by the salt gurus that fresh juiced was the way to go. Seems like alot of plant based "myths " get corrected in time and seems like you always got the "new" info! You put alot of good info out thanks!

No problem, always happy to lend a hand.

I always use a powdered dry form of garlic, and I freeze my treats in unflavored gelatin. Elephant garlic is a variant of garlic that grows in the wild Wva, it has a strong garlic flavor with a hint of scallion taste and they grow quite large. I have it (and eat it) in abundance so I was just wondering if it can be used.
