Yes, they can be kept in groups in a large enough tank.I would say a 75-90 would be good for 1m 3f or something similar, and a 125 would be good for a decent sized colony with 2 or 3 males.
 
it's a 1 meter tall 1 m wide and 0.5 metes deep, with A LOT of rock and driftwood... I'm looking for a chaotic community(only HRP, maybe some ancistrus cats), would i be able to keep them in a similar density? I plan on keeping the kids in the tank for as long as possible...

Interesting tank size, I'd go for one male in that size tank as a lot of the volume is in the height, which doesn't really matter to cichlids. You could probably do a 1m 3f colony pretty easily in there with lots of rocks though.
