Here’s my question Now I want to clarify I started with a larger group of the Honduran red points I then had the alpha male appear to select his female and I think she’s female but want to make sure I looked up online said females have a orange blotch on their side and hers is there it’s a little faint but you can see it and appears she has the vertical bars that appears to turn on and off. she’s more blue but I looked up and it appears her fins match a female more blunt and round but want to ask you to make sure that she is for sure female they seem to be doing great together which I would have to think would mean they are male and female then, because if they were the same sexes they would fight. Also the male was chasing every other one except the one that he chose in the pics below. Because I read they are territorial when trying to find their mate Which also guides me to thinking she is for sure female but want to make sure. Here are pictures. Their always appear to be swimming together or near each other too All the time.the male also will flare his gills occasionally I think more than anything trying to impress too which is cool. Now there are two pictures of websites I found where they show a male and female my female appears to nit be displaying the vertical bars all the time more faint along with that her orange blotch is faint but you can see it. Here are pics please help me make sure I have a male and female.
thanks,

stephen z

The male is larger, and has longer dorsal and anal fin extentions, like the male below.

The females are generally smaller, display slightly more melanin, and show less fin extension.

Its pretty obvious you have a pair

The melanin is also displayed in males during brood care.

Also now in your pics compared to mine they do have more vertical bars is this during breeding? Because currently the female In my tank are more of the dots, but she seems to be able to turn the bars on and off and the male is like the pics above.

Yes the breeding season, and brood increases the melanin all round.
Males much less when not breeding.

They definitely intensify color when in breeding mode. The bars will get darker/thicker, and the color deep and intense. Some of my females have a black beard. One has a combo blue/black gill plate. My largest female Pip is 4 1/4" measured last year. I have several males at 6".

Sometimes the bars will brighten or fade while they swim!
