Ok I rebuilt my 160 bowfront tank stand. Now I'm no master at wood working so I need some opinions on what to do next. Here's option one continue by adding trim to hide the black on the tank and stain then add a finish to the wood. Option two finish building the stand and paint it black? Also when you see the before and after pics keep in mind I'm not finished and there will also be a canopy made. So just let me know what you think "sand and stain" or "paint black".

u can go one step easier and get a simple piece of vinyle or wood vinear and use it one the tanks black trim then just stain the stand to match..i too prefer the natural wood look with my stands.

Did you just cut some random boards and nail them to the outside of the existing stand?

Honestly.....I don't think it looks very great. And from the looks of the corners, they are not very flush. Staining it isn't going to look real great on this IMHO. I don't mean to be harsh, but that's my honest opinion (you asked for it :) ). See my comments below on how I'd "fix" it to make it look better.

I'd skin the whole thing with a nice 1/8" ply with a nice stainable finish. Then, get yourself a mider box, and cut the trim properly to go over the bottom edges and top edges as well as 3/4 round to go over the vertical edges. Again, get a mider box (they're not expensive) so that you can do it correctly with good edges for the trim. Do this with finish nails, use a punch to sink them, and if you are going to paint, use wood filler to fill the sunk nail hole before painting so you can't even see where the nail was.

Good luck! Wood working takes time to get good at. Eventually, you'll be able to make some really cool stuff.
