I just finished up (mostly) my hood and base for my 10 gallon. I used 3" furing strip and 1*4's to make an elevated base, and the same + Crown moulding for the hood. I used two ceramic medium base bulb sockets, and I have 2 20 watt CF screw in bulbs (6500K color temperature).

I stained the setup Jacobean...it is drying now. Still deciding if I want the front crown moulding hinged or glued into place...I'm beginning to think glued would look better....but will it always be a pain to feed and do maintenance to remove the hood?

I'll post some pictures of it later tomorrow...

Thanks,
Jon

Here's the hood and base. I think it turned out pretty well. I just painted the inside of it white, and got a little paint on the outside. Other than that, it turned out great. I will jsut have to live with the dripped paint until i can fix it.

Thanks,
Jon

Nice work and you can scale it up too. If you hinge the lid make sure to secure the bottom half to the tank or it can flip over, I had a commercial one that would fall off the tank untill I siliconed the bottom half on the tank. I prefer to remove the top for cleaning.
How about a pic of the lites? Keep up the good work. There's nothin' like doin' it yourself.

was a little cloudy from the kitty litter and play sand:WHOA:

Actually that combo works GREAT for plants. You put about 1" of ground clay (the ORIGINAL kitty litter. Sold as OIL-DRI or plain unscented unclumping kitty litter.), with about the same of play sand on top. Good Iron for the plant's roots, and I usually put in some regular gravel too. I hope to aquascape it today with some rocks, driftwood, and terracing with regular aquarium gravel.

I'll post some pics as it evolves!

OH...I ended up just gluing the front crown molding. The air vent in top allows for feeding, and I wouldn't have been able to do maintenance through the hinged top.
