I never see saltwater tanks with hoods I always see canopys, I remember reading somthing about how hoods alter the PH or somthing
but I was wondering if it would be better to buy a hood or a canopy.

HUH?

where the heck did you read that garbage?

i have a lid on my 10 gallon and it's doing swell...

i also have one with a canopy and one with no top at all.. all doing great

canopies generally look better to most people, but can also cost a few hundred bucks... the choice is really yours.. there are dis/advantages to each

"Hoods alter PH" in all my years of keeping Marines, I have never heard that one before. Whoever told you that, must have been "Missguided" to say the least. I have always used hoods on my Marine Predator systems. Not once have I had a PH issue.

its better to use hoods etc.. it will protect from things from the outside in my opinion.. especially when there are more ppl in your house, you never know whats going 2 happen.. if somebody accidently throw something in the tank ur sick about it..

yeah I had no idea how ti would alter the ph, but I wondered maybe it would help stop evaporation

well a lid would do that just fine.. my ten gallon have VERY little evap cause it has a good fitting lid

My husband and I have both read that a hood will cut down on the gas/oxygen exchange. I also it cuts down on the amount of light getting directly to you tank. we are running alot of wattage in our aquarium. We decided to do a little test for ourselves. we had glass tops/hoods on ours and we took them off one side (our 120 had 2) and we could tell a huge difference in the amount of light getting in the tank on the side that had no hood. To keep your fish in should you decide to go with out a hood you can buy eggcrate and cut it to fit the top of your aquarium, I take care of my friends 90g and thats what we did with hers. We have a canopy with a retro light kit so all of our fishys stay inside because of the canopy
