hooking a powerhead up to a ugf

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Buy the powerhead, most come with a cone shape adapter that slips right into the uplift tube from your UG filter. There is also an airhose to hookup that will put air into the water output of the powerhead.

That would be exactly how to do it. Are you going with any other filtration?

how would i go about doing this i have know clue how too

This pic below is from 1 of Oddballs posts, hopefully will give you a visual, plus I've never seen a pwhd that didn't come w/ pretty straight forward instructions. "Old" styles sit in the top of your UGF up tube as show below, w/ the air hose placed in the pwhd's out tube, then run out the top & off the side of the tank to draw air into the pwrhd & tank for heavy areation, micro bubbles all in your tank, like a marine tank filled w/ bubbles (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=4644&N=2004+113040). A reverse pwhd w/ an UGF, pushing flow under the UGF plate, instead of pulling like the pic. below, no areation w/ this application (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=4635&N=2004+113040) this would also act as an additional mech fiter.
You can use quick filters on your pwrhd's & place them anywhere on the glass (UGF not used w/ this application) you need for just increased flow, no air & it would act as an additional mech. filter also (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4638&rel=1). Also there are many new styles like a magnetic placement style, instead of old style suction cups (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=16752&N=2004+113040) Most all pwhd's are adjustable flow, so make sure you open/slide them to what ever GPH flow is safest for your fish/plants. The pwhds can face any dir. you want, best to consider how to utilize them to aid your additional filters intake tubes. You can face them toward the sides of your tank to diffuse them if the flow is still to great for your tank after you've adjusted them down. Keep them clean as you do any other mech.'s in your tank, they can get gunked up pretty easy, depending on your bio-load. Just look to see where they come apart at (sometime you think your gonna break them taking them apart, but then they just pop apart & careful, it's plastic, but it still can cut you), most have 3 pcs or so plus the impeller comes out & should also be cleaned. The fish/plants you will be keeping is what will ultimately decide what you'll need, flow rate increased/decreased i.e. for plants, areation, incresed mech filtration ect. Hope that helps a bit. :) :) :)
