I've got two Sunsun canisters going on a tank, to avoid a bunch of tubes inside the tank I'd like to have a single return and intake tube. What diameter tubing would be sufficient for flowing the required amounts to the two filters? They will flow about 800gph combined. I was thinking a 1.5" intake and 1" return. Would that be sufficient? I would make this out of PVC.

It wouldn't make a difference, since the flow will be dictated by the diameter of the canisters' hose connectors

I tried this and found that the filters didn't perform as well as they should?
They both have there own intake & return pipes now and they are performing much better

The benefit of two intakes and outlets is better water circulation. And you don't just suck poop out of one corner, but it of two corners.

That alone is reason for me to keep two intakes and outlets for my canisters.
