Came home from work last night to find one of my Hoplarchus guarding some eggs. Unfortunately I don't think they were fertilized as it is the larger of my two Hoplarchus doing the guarding and the other is no where near the ggs or even the side of the tank. I am horrible at venting and could not even see any signs of the vent being lowered in the smaller fish . I'm still hopeful but I am pretty sure I jsut have ID'ed one of the tow as a female. Anyone else out there that has had eggs for their Hoplarchus that were not fertile? I am going to start searching for a male soon . These fish are so expensive though I doubt I'll find what i want in my price range.
Thanks

Just because only 1 is guarding does not mean they were not fertilized. What color are the eggs?
Correct! Sometimes one of the parents will force the other to stay away from the eggs or fry if they feel that the spawn could be eaten by the other. Fertile eggs are tan or golden brown in color. You could have fertile eggs after all. There are several members that keep this species. Hopefully they will chime in with more specific advice.

Sadly ,
as expected the eggs were 90% gone when i left for work . I jsut came home to find her guarding the few remaining eggs ....all white. Now I will ghave to revent the two fish i have , as the water is moderately hard which might have been a factor.....however i suspect from behaviors that I have two females.
I might be in the market for ading a for sure male now LOL
Thanks
Tim
