thought I would share some photos of a group of psittacus as they grew through the years.
In July of 2002 I received a group of 5 Hoplarchus psittacus from Jeff Rapps at Tangled Up In Cichlids. They were about 1" in size when I bought them.
At about 3"
At about 5" with a Uaru fernandezyepezi in the background
At about 4 years old
Finally successful spawn at 5 years old
Their offspring
The alpha male at about 5 years old and 14" in size. Surpisingly he was not the male that bred with the female.
The breeder female at about 6 years old and 10"
The group turned out to be 3 females and 2 males.
The large male in the photo and one of the females are now being kept by a hobbyist in Ohio. Hopefully he will have luck spawning them.
The breeding pair went on the have multiple spawnings, but like most not so common species there was little interest in their fry and I stopped taking the time to pull the eggs and hatch artificially.
The breeder female was recently killed by the male and the male is now for sale in MI.
I'm think about finding some juvies and starting over again.
