Hey,

I am receiving a young (7"-8") hoplias aimara in the next couple of days and I plan on starting him in a 25 gallon long (I believe the foot print in 3' x 1') and then moving him into a 65 gallon with a foot print of 36" x 18". I know they don't need large tanks, but I was hoping to house him in it for at least the next 6 months. until I move into a bigger place. The reason why I ask is because I have had fairly uneven results with growth rates of other wolfs. My old mala that I got at 6" grew over a foot within the first year of having him and I had him put into a 75 gallon by the end of the first year. However my sp. Xingu grew much slower. After receiving him at 4"-5" long he stayed in a 40 gallon for the better part of two years.

Also I know most people keep their aimara tanks fairly basic (bare bottom, possibly a few rocks or logs), but I would like to see pics of anyone who put their aimara in a well decorated tank. I plan on having a very elaborate set up by the time he moves into the 65.

Thanks,
Justin Morash

Hello my friend, I can tell you that keeping him in a tank that size would probably mean disaster for your fingers or his life, because they are powerful jumpers!

i also would like to know their growth rate as maybe i might be keeping one if it reach my shore. My mala from 3" to 13" in 2 years. Xingu Black wolf got it at 10" didnt seem to grow at all. I wonder how long it will take to reach 4ft for H.aimara

yea heard the same, slow grower. do take caution with smaller tank, mine leaped out of the water to snap at my hands while doing some maintenance up top. Luckily the 3 ft tall tank was only half full of water. it missed me but tail hit my hand on the way back down. larger tank will also help keep the fish from damaging it's mouth as it thrashes around.

mala's behavior appear mild when compared.

I keep my baby aimara( 9 inches) in a 100 gal tank and I wonder how long it gonna take until i go for next tank. I am tinking at a 7X3X2 to be next.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I decided to go straight for the 65 gallon and avoided the quarantine process in the 25 gallon long. He seems pretty happy, and much more active than I thought. That being said, much less aggressive than I expected. I'm going to leave him in the 65 for as long as I can, as soon as I find him becoming unhappy or find myself having difficulty cleaning the tank I will switch him into a 120-180 gallon tank. I just didn't want to buy a new tank that size when I should have one open in a few months anyways.

I just have a very special fish reserved for the current running 120, but that will need a bigger tank in a bit anyways.

Thanks again,

Justin Morash

do a 50% water change every 2 weeks coupled with a good diet like silversides etc. And youll see good results -
