I have heard that there are many different hoplias and wanted to know which ones could be kept as pets besides the malbaricus which is the only one of its species which is illegal where i live. i currently have a 55 gallon but plan on buying a 110 or 120 in a couple of weeks if i have to. so are there anyother hoplias that are the same nature and roughly the same size or bigger than the mabaricus? or any species that exceeds 12 inches?

There are quite a few Hoplias species. The problem is...finding them available for hobbyists. There is currently a Hoplias aimara available from a site vendor. It's at the best price we've ever seen listed at $1,500.00.
Here's a list of current Hoplias species (for your Googling pleasure):

Hoplias species:

Hoplias aimara

Hoplias brasiliensis

Hoplias lacerdae

Hoplias malabaricus

Hoplias microcephalus

Hoplias microlepis

Hoplias patana

Hoplias teres

How they go for $1500? They are not rare, they are just big and odd looking :O $1500 for crazy looking fish, might as well getting an Asian Arowana instead :O

they are way more expensive in Europe, the aimaras....

Id look into a gold wolf for a 120-150 or a high fin rainbow something along those lines. Check with the vendors they can lend a helping hand.

Can you please post a list of some vendors who sell wolf fish please?

i think maybe you should go with a rainbow highfin.

hello,

yep, as already mentioned, rainbow highfin is probably the best choice, even for your 55 gallon tank, you could keep it there forever.

A few more pluspoints: more active and more colours than hoplias species.

cheers,

Thimo
