Does anyone own a Holplias Malabaricus / the Common Wolf Fish? How are they? Active or just laying at the bottom most of the time and moving when feeding? Do you guys have any tankmates with it? Hope you can share your experience, thank you for reading and if possible please post pictures of your Wolf Fish.:)

With mine, tankmates=food. He's definitely not my most active fish. But, he occassionally gets up into the middle and upper water column and patrols his territory. He's not near fully grown yet but, he is pushing the foot and a half mark:

Mine is more or less also patrolling the middle and upper water column...only acceptable mate is a pleco...

also not an active fish..:)

you want a more active and beautifull wolf ( i mean totally active ) go Hoplerythrinus ( Gold wolf ).

Thanks a lot for replying Miguel. I think a Hoplias Malabaricus fan would get the fish just for the looks of it and for what it is.:D So I feel that although it isn't an active fish as I've heard it would be awesome to own one. Has that ever bothered or disappointed you?

The Red High Fin Wolf is definitely in my list. I saw some pictures of the Golden Wolf, great looking...but where could I find one? It's rare isn't it? And if possible please post a picture of your Wolf.

Edit: Oh I forgot to ask another question, is it ok to have a pair of Hoplias Malabaricus?

it is okay to have a pair if it is a male/female..

I would say the golden wolf is more interesting ( more Malabaricus like in appearance ) than the rainbow ( erythrinus erythrinus ). The rainbow is rather timid..even more so than the Malabaricus ( in my case )...

I will lok for pixs

Thanks for replying, I saw this awesome looking Red High Fin Wolf at Aquascapeonline, gotta have that one!!! ( picture below ). Do you have a Golden Wolf? And is it possible to sex a Wolf Fish? I heard a female would be roundish / big belly in appearance while a male looking slender.

How to sex at a young age? *Adds Golden Wolf in his list*:headbang2

Looking forward for the pics.:)

I don't have mine anymore but she was pretty inactive unless it was lunch time. Never tried her with tank mate other than those she was meant to eat.

here is a quick vid of her

ive had wolves in the past 2 of them as a matter in fact and one was in with pirahnas for a year and not problems and the other was with tankmates but its been so long since i had the first one i cant remember what i had em in with. i really dont like the fish cause there so boring but i am doing another tank of festea, jack dempsey, red devil, jardini and i went ahead and boughht another wolf figuring this would be just as good as a set up that ive had in the past. this wolf fish does seem a little more aggressive then the ones ive owned in the past so it will be awile before i can tell how he does with his tankmates. right now i have the festea in with him with 4 severums that are soon to be removed and i have the jack in with him so i still need to pick up the red devil and grow out my jardini for this tank to be complete. i currently also have 2 shortbeak gars and 4 quarter sized uros in there but there food if anyone wants them.:)
