hi i have a hoplias malabaricus and would like to know, can it be mixed with a snakehead in a 450 litre tank? it could be one of 2 snakeheads: channa aurantimaculata or channa asiatica.

Both channa are young and are much the same size as my young wolf (around 8 inches, if anything wolffish is slightly smaller). At the moment channa asiatica is in the 450, living with a 9" oscar with no problems (been living in there for 2 months) wolffish doesnt seem that aggressive, likes to keep himself to himself - same as asiatica. Oscar swims at the top of tank not bothering anbody - all hes interested in is food. would appreciate any input on mixing options - or maybe they just cant be mixed and i might have to let him go.

thanks.

Both Auranti's and Asiatica are sub tropical and the wolf is tropical so that is not ideal. I personally would not recommend this combo. Mala's can be aggresive and the two snakehead species mention can certanly be so aswell.

u seem to know ur stuff jelly, i wonder is there any chance i could put my little wolf in with my ozzy, wolf is 5", ozzy is 7", in my 450L tank and my asiatica in my 300L. i know very little about wolf fish, but i am quite taken with his attitude and would like to keep him.
I have 3 other smaller tanks available, 2, 100L and 1, 180L.
what do ya think m8.

should be fine.
but always be ready to separate.
Thanks pal, hav u had much dealings with wolfs, was wondering could u tell me r there any other fish that may b worth a try under close watch.
In my experience with other pred. fish if they grow up together sometimes it worksout ok. and as my wolf is young this is my chance, but u cant beat the experients of people who hav tryed and experimented, thanks for any info u can give.
Could u tell me, do wolf hav any interaction when feeding, or are they still shy, eg. can u feed them with tongs.

yeah...ive kept my fair share...LOL
ive really never had problems with malas and other fish.
ive kept them with each other, and basically anything else you can think of.
aros,pbass,lungfish,cichlids,barras,etc.
in my experience, they are shyer when with aggressive feeders.
but as long as food reaches them, theyll take it.

By ozzy are we talking about an Aro?. It should work.

The secret to keeping you wolk active is not to over feed him, when he is a few inches bigger have a couple of days gap between feeding, he will then be hungry and associate you with food. Some Mala's are more active than others though.

Good luck with him. Wolf fish are along with snakeheads my favourites.

many thanks to both of you, i feel a lot better about keeping him now.
I hav snake heads my self, asiatica, auranti mac, stewarti, pulcra and assam , but i will be the 1st to say i am still feeling my way and know very little about wolfs and heard some bad things from snake head men, but i hav to say my wolf is quite active and seems to hav some personality when hungry.
I wonder could u tell me where he sits in the agression factor with other wolf speceis as i was originaly looking for a red wolf that ime told are a good bit smaller. Thanks again simon.
