The only way I can fit an eheim 2260 in my stand, is if I fit it horizontally oriented instead of vertically oriented. Has anyone done so before? Experience? Can anybody foresee any problems? It being a classic eheim, I don't think there should be any obvious problem; however, I obviously do not want a flood.

The only problem I forsee is the 2260 blowing the seal and flooding the area, running dry, frying the pump and causing a complete disaster....all while you are at work.
The filter is designed to pump and filter from a vertical orientation. Dont mess with a German R&D department...those engineer guys are scary smart.
Seriously, you are headed in a bad direction. Put the filter outside the stand. Build a little box enclosure over it and put a lamp on it like an end table.
:nono:

I would think the canister itself would bend/warp causing a leak then the top may burst and siphon all the water in the tank onto the floor. If you are still determined then try it out and let us know the result.

DONT DO IT. bad idea, theres gotta be another way

Agreed! Their not designed for it and imo a HORIZONTAL laying canister would be a notable feature if you could sit it both ways!

You can mount it normally if you sit it just outside the side of the stand left or right, the tubing will reach but the siphon and intake will have to be mounted closer to the corner

You can also rotate the pump so the output fitting is on the side instead of the top. This may help you with the clearance issue in the stand.

+1

Personal opinion: I think it's worth an email to Eheim. They probably have an official stance or at least recommendations for your situation.
