Please share your opinion which is more desirable... here are some pros I can think of for each:

Horizontal:
More surface is skimmed
Takes up less swimming room from fish

Vertical:
Less plumbing required for under-tank sump
Aquarium can be closer to the wall

Any other considerations?

No... ones that are horizontal across the top back of the aquarium. They don't extend down to the bottom like the vertical ones, holes are drilled in the back of the tank instead of the bottom.

By horizontal, are you referring to external overflow boxes?

I have two 4' external overflow boxes on my tank. Internal overflow boxes do take up tank space.

The horizontal sounds cool. I dont have a drilled tank though ive got an oveflow box and i like that it doesnt take too much room. I guess IMO it would be if you see the extra cost and plumbing being woth it. I never bought a tank with vertical overflows cause IMO they take too much room and id rather my fish have the space than that area just being wasted.

That looks very cool... I'm trying to work out how it works. Does the water flow through the white grids? How do you ensure no water leaks? Would be interesting to see a photo from the other side.

Many of us watched this 4000 gallon tank setup thread with great interest. You can see how the overflow boxes are plumbed.

BTW, the tank has changed hands a few times and is now owned by bigrich545

i prefer extrenal overflow because you can use beananimal silent method and uses no space inside the tank

If I have two overflows (preferrably horizontal)... the BeanAnimal method is not needed, the Herbie method should be good enough since one overflow backs up the other. Does that make sense or am I missing something?
