I have a book from aquatic ecosystems and in it they have this stuff called ova prime which is something thats used alot on fish farms just wondering if anyones ever used it to breed their gars
its around 35.00 for a jar of it.

Not sure on that specific hormone, but I do know that most, if not all, farms use hormones to breed their gars. However, I wouldn't try using the hormones unless you know exactly how to use them considering that they need to be injected if my memory serves me right.

Solomon (E_americanus) & Richard (Polypterus) can provide you with way better info on that topic than I ever could, though.

Ryans right. Hit up solomon and/or richard on this. Not something to just mess with. That said, out of curiosity, what are you looking to breed?

was hoping to breed floridas and longnoses. longnoses are not too common in the hobby. planning on putting them in a large pond set up once they outgrow their tanks.

Floridas would not be cost/time efficient. If I were u, id go with a hybrid. Id snatch up a lng/flg hybrid. Hybrids are quite rare and some of us seek them out. If you produced them, I would want.

Still waiting to see if any medius pop up. Someone in here had a lead on them.

medius? never seen a longnose florida hybrid lol

Medius is a.term coined for lng/sng hybrids. I havnt seen a lng/flg hybrid either, dont mean I wouldnt be interested.

I also forgot to mention that gar fry are notoriously difficult to rear from the egg, and you will probably lose most, if not all, of them if you don't go about hatching & raising them in the correct fashion.

As for others making hybrids, I'm going to try to get a few adult Florida gars this summer for the pond, so hopefully Snookn21 can get me some nice ones. I also hope to acquire a few adult longnose gars & shortnose gars as well. I'm still working on determining how the current gars are doing as I have yet to see them this year. However, I've found evidence of their survival in the form of dead fishes of various sizes (sunfish fry up to an adult smallmouth bass) with gar-like tooth marks on them, so I think that at least one of each gar species in there made it, if not all of them. Of course then, I'm not even sure if I'll get baby gars once these gars reach breeding age as I have no idea as to what their genders are and if they'll even breed for me in this pond.

Hopefully ryan!! You know i want some hybrids!!

I know some fish farms use Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HGC) injections into females to induce ovulation. That said, the females must already be producing fertile eggs, if they arnt breeding age yet or if they are male they will be sterilized by these injections. They sell HGC for pretty cheap as diet medicine. It makes the females start ovulating so I assume the males come flocking.
