Hornwort and cichlids

I'm going to say no on this one...well...if you plan on planting it, then no. If you're just going to let them float, then probably yes. They'll more likely survive, but they won't stay planted.
 
Mine does. Oscars, Pike cichlid, bullhead, and green sunfish. I would say some of the more brutal fish around. They always unanchor the stuff but it survives. Its doing a weird thing where the bottom of the plant looks totally different from the top but i think that is a seasonal thing.
 
Can you just use some fishing line and tie them to a rock? Do the roots need to be under the substrate?
 
Hornworts do not have roots whether you float or plant it. It is a floating plant and should remain floating lest you want to replant it constantly as the bottom part decomposes. It'll be fine with your cichlids. Very few aquatic creatures would love to eat brittle feathery plants like hornworts.
