this morning i woke up to see my senegal bichir upside down on the gravel between a cave and the glass, he was in a 29 gallon tank and just 5" long, the tankmates were at that time a 1.75" Jack dempsey a 7" dwarf needlefish which was fed night before, a 6" pleco and a 3" Blood parrot which cant close its mouth.
so i see it dead and i had him for almost more than a year now and died FOR NO REASON, and in a scary way. the water was crystal clear as always, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and the nitrates were under control.

this is what freaked me out, when i first looked at it it was just upside down and dead no signs of beat up fins, etc. or anything, after 5-10 minutes i come back and the blood parrot was kind of pushing it with its non closing mouth to see if it was alive or food. but then all of a sudden its belly was COMPLETELY RIPPED open and its intestines were coming out.. NONE of my fish can do this as the JD is barely 1.75" is a baby, and the needlefish belly was still full from last night goldfish. and the pleco is 6" long and dont have teeth, PLECOS DO NOT tear fish apart like PIRANHAS, this bichir looked like as if a piranha ate its belly

what the heck could it be?? the ammonia is 0 nitrites and nitrates under control, water was crystal clear

the only thing i can think about was a gigantic parasitic worm that was inside of the bichir and then all of sudden in 5-10 minutes ripped the belly open and got out and jumped on my carpet. To give u some more clues, the bichir did have signs of big bellys for NO REASON, WEEKS or MONTHS AGO, but yesterday's night it was clompletely fine just ate the FEW bloodworms i dropped.

but the blood parrot cant close his mouse never closes just "pushes" he cant TEAR OPEN belly from just slightly push, it pushed it for about 4" away from where it lay

Weird and sorry for your loss buddy.

Pleco could damage what was left of the slime coat but I'm almost positive no pleco under any circumstance could tear through ganoid scales. Nor could a blood parrot and of that I'm 100% certain.
