As some of you may know I had some angelfish with mollies, platies, swordtail, and siamese algae eaters and my angels started getting their fins nipped, and I had the mollies and siamese algae eaters and platies picking on them. So I put all those fish into a 10 gallon tank, because that is all I had room for and I knew it wouldn't be big enough but there was 15x filtration, lots of plants, and a sponge filter so I thought it would work. Well I have had 1 sae and 4 mollies die so far so I obviously need to do something. I would really like to keep my two sword tails, and platties and I would like to add them to my angelfish tank, but has anyone had any experience with either the platies or swordtails nipping at angelfish?

Thanks

If I am reading right, all the fish that died were the ones that you moved to the 10 gallon. Is that right?

If so, did you cycle that tank? How long ago did you put water and fish in it? What are the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels?

My thinking is that you may have too much ammonia in the tank if it was just filled and stocked at the same time. Having a large community in a small tank just means you'll have to address your water more frequently. Even with 15x filtration, more ammonia will lead to more nitrites which will lead to more nitrates which will lead to more water changes.

No the tank was cycled, I used filter media and water from my other tank and originally had them all in a 25, but the 25 was only temporary and I had to tear it down and move them to the 10, it was only after I moved them to the 10 that they started dying, it has been about 2 weeks since I moved them and they only started dying. The water is in good condition so I do not believe it is that.

Thanks

Honestly, the 25 gallon is too small for the angels in my opinion. You should just sell the angels and make a livebearer tank.

Either set up a 2nd larger aquarium that is atleast 50 gallons for the Angles or get rid of the Angels.

I've never had an issue with the above mentioned fish with my angels...I've had my angels rip apart smaller fish like that though..no problem lol..mind you, they are a breeding pair and tend to be a lil stinky. They now have their own tank, so I need not worry.:)

Hopefully everythign works out well!!!

I actually just threw in the towel on attempting any schoolers(besides cories) with my angel. She's been in tanks with platys, mollies, they nipped her. Not bad, but enough. Most other tetras do the same. I just moved her to a 60 gallon tall with a ram, krib and some panda cories. She's much happier now.........

They may be cichlids, but they just cant defend themselves against nippers well. At best you'll end up with a fish that stays in the top corner of the tank all the time. At worst, fin rot and it's reallt stubborn in a tank when it takes hold. Technically, you should be able to keep those fish together, but space will dictate alot of what is and is not compatible, within a certain space..............
