Hey everyone, recently i have been seeing alot of these so called " horse face cichlids" in LFS's around here. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these fish and what sort of tankmates would go well with them.

Horrible common name.

Because you're in Australia (differs elsewhere I'm sure), here's the scientific names for them:

Red Horse Face: Geophagus brachybranchus
Green Horse Face: Satanoperca leucosticta

Essentially the same requirements for tankmates, diet, social structure etc.

Must have: Sand substrate, 4+ (Preferably at least 6) specimens with a decent M/F ratio, High quality diet of small sized food (1mm pellets for adults), 5x15' minimum tank footprint.

Very externally peaceful fish that can show a reasonable amount of conspecific aggression. I recommend keeping colonies by themselves or with medium sized South American dwarves such as Laetacara/Cleithracara sp.

Is that the red face in your avatar? Very pretty, cool looking fish.
