I was at my LFS and I stumbled across a tank labeled Horseface Jewel Geophagus. Inside the tank, there were several Geophaguses about 4-5 inches long, which had a nice iridescent green color with beautiful finnage. I wanted to get one but I decided to do a little more research before I shelled out 29 bucks for one. I could not find anything about this Geophagus and I was hoping someone from this forum could enlighten me. Unfortunately, I do not have pictures of the cichlid but only the name that was written on the tank at the LFS. I looked online and tried to snag a picture of what it looks like but the closest one I could find was this picture, but the ones at the LFS had no red on their fins. I am sorry for being so vague but I was hoping someone on this forum has heard of horseface jewel geophaguses, and could give me some input on what I am dealing with.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I think they could be Satanoperca leucosticta because I don't recall the fish having a black spot on the lateral side like Geophagus surinamensis. Looking at the pictures online there see to be a lot of color variations of Satanoperca leucosticta. Does it develop that red as it gets older? because the ones at the LFS had no red at all.

I've never heard of a horseface Geophagus. Did you read and article about Sarah Jessica Parker maybe?

:ROFL:I've seen Geophagus Altifrons and Geuphagus Abalios sold as "horseface" locally.

OP you really have no luck getting an ID on a geo without a picture of the actual fish. The differences from one spcecies to another can be rather small. You digged up a wonderful pic of Ryan's G. altifrons 'tocantins' though.

LOL

Yea, I figured it was a long shot to get an ID, but I was hoping someone had heard of the name. Well I thinking about picking it up tomorrow after work. So, I will get some pictures of it up as soon as i can. Thanks all for the help!

Alright guys well I picked up the so called horseface jewel cichlid and here are a few pics of it. I am pretty sure it is a Geophagus surinamensis, but a second opinion would be great. I tried digging up some info on these guys but I found a lot of conflicting information. The LFS owner said that they get to about 7 inches long, but I read online they can get up to a foot. Also, some people say that it is a large aggressive fish and others say that it is a medium sized peaceful community fish, could anyone clear this up for me?
