Hi I have been working on plumbing a filter system and am using 3/4 hose. I bought 3/4 barbs that screw into 3/4 inch pvc. were the fittings screw into the PVC barbs I am getting drips from the threads.

Will this eventuaslly swell and seal on its own, or do I need to do something else? The system does not use o-rings as there is no place for them to sit, except maybe on the outside like on an overflow.

Thought about teflon tape but that can't be good.

What would make you think the threads would seal with out some sort of sealant?

preasure like brake lines nitrous lines etc. I never have to use tape on those.

Very cool, I am backing everything off to use tape now. I just didn't want it to leach.

As long as the tape is safe for potable water use(which I am pretty sure is the only kind they sell in the hardware store) it will be fine for the fish.

Apples and oranges. Two completely different sealing systems.
Use the tape on tapered pipe threads.
The flares and compression fittings you mentioned seal by the way they fit together.
Pipe only has the threads and they are not machined to close enough tolerances to be leak proof by themselves.

Yes, this is correct. Compression fittings like break lines, swage lock and so on do not rely on the threads to seal.
Pipe threads need teflon tape to seal. The teflon tape actually acts as a lubricant to get the pipe threads completely water tight and it's safe for the fish.
