Hospital/Quarantine tank...

I see those used a lot. Will they still grow BB if there are no fish in the tank? I will keep all my fish in show tanks, but if one or more gets sick, I want to pull them out into the QT tank until they are healthy so they don't harm the other fish. Can I just keep another tank setup ready in case of sickness, or will there have to be fish in there? Maybe I can use it as a feeder holding tank or something?

I have a 60 gallon with an old emperor400 and 280 that's setup in my garage. A 6" angelfish occupies the tank and I usually leave her in unless Im using it for meds, which is very rare. I also have a 90 that has ben used for qt purposes and the angel "Lucy" will occasionally spend time with a fish in the 90. If I put the angel in the 90, I move the biowheels from the filters on the 60 into the sump on the 90 t keep some bb alive....

been setup and usually occupied by something for around 5 years now.....

since Ive used the qt setup, I haven't had to treat any illness in my displays, other than occasional salt from fish being rough on each other

Not a great setup for some of the fish I keep but I have one: 20gal with a 100watt heater, top and light and a whisper ex45. I do not keep it running but a little seeded filter media and a panty hose or 2 full of substrate and I'd be good to go with a setup of about 30 mins to an hour.

I have extra sponge in each tanks filter so I can move it to the quarantine tank, along with water from whichever tank the sick one came from.
