Hot water

Do smaller water changes more often...

so are you saying your tap water is coming out too hot? if so throw some ice into it and water conditioner

If you put a block of ice in the tank and put hot water in the tank... eventually this will cool the water but in effect you will simply have hot spots and cold spots which is bad for your fish...

You can make water changes as complicated as you wish by putting water into a holding tank then putting ice in it... then mixing it... then pumping it into the aquarium...

Or you can simply do small water changes at a time... If the tank water is 80*F... and the tap water is 90*F... and you do a 10% water change... the finished result is the tank water goes up 1*F... when putting new water in with either buckets or a hose, it's quite easy to do so in a way that mixes the new water rather evenly to prevent hot spots...

How big is your tank, if you have the availability to fill the 5g up with water and let it sit in a basement for a few hours, I'm sure it would drop in temp. Or if you have AC, you could let it sit where ever.

But on this one I think nutcase has the best answer.

buy a few good sized buckets and allow the water to sit for a day. it will lower the temp on its own. this is the easiest thing to do. if you have space for it, get a big rubbermaid tub just for this purpose.
