My tnk in my room is normally 74-76 it is very hot in my room and the tank is at 86 degrees. Fish look very sluggish and slow moving. I turned the tank lights off and put 10 ice cubes in a ziplock bag nd hve it sitting in the tank. Dont know if this is safe or not just didnt know what else to do. Any other ideas on how to cool it a bit?
Hello; I run extra air bubbles in warm weather. I have dropped trays of ice cubes into my tanks for years. A forum member posted that this could kill fish, but never answered my query as to how. I would still like to know the thinking behind the concern.
At any rate I have dumped trays of ice cubes into tanks for decades without a problem. I do not dump a lot at any one time. The ice does not really lower the temp much, more that it keeps it from getting higher. It may not be a popular thing to do , but I have gotten away with it for a long time.
Do not dump ice cube. Drop a little and it doesn't do much to the temperature. Drop a lot and your fish could go into the thermal shock. I support Crunchy's idea of using a fan to cool the water. Increasing evaporation would remove much temperature from the water, in a slow and stable way.
If the problem persist, you might want to invest in a decent chiller.
