We have extreme mechanical filtration with two spa filters on our 300 gallon tank. In the nearly 5 years the tank has been running, there was been no debris to vacuum out. (it's a bare floor tank).

The bill on the Hot tub filter is factored only on the Pump. BUT the bill on the heater is going to factor on soo many different levels. Added I don't think Hot tub heaters are meant to run at a constant on.

Spa filters are only for mechanical filtration. The filter cartridge can be soaked in bleach and rinsed off. Ours are so filthy and disgusting, we just replace them every couple of months.

Here's more information on the filtration on our 300 gallon tank. Post 21

With the Hammerhead pump, we have a strong current in the tank which the fish love. Here's what it looks like during a water change.

I love this mechanical system so much, on our big tank we're going with four large spa filters run by two Hammerheads. There will be six mechanical uptakes, including four poop suckers. While our Ultimas will do some mechanical, we're counting on the spa filters to do most of the dirty work, while the Ultimas primary purpose will be biological filtration.

When we were setting up our tank, I found an individual who has a business setting up and maintaining tanks. He's the one who sold us our first Hammerhead pump and spa filters. They are much less than the canister filters at the LFS, but do so much more mechanical filtration. I've actually not heard of any other fishkeepers using this system. Here's a picture of one of his systems.
