is a paper sediment filter needed before the carbon block filter? will it extend the life of the carbon filter or will it just be another added expense?

I use a ceramic core as a pre-filter. Actually it is a whole other filter but in-line before my carbon filter. The ceramic core filters down to 5 micron and is easily backflushed to clean but needs slow flow which is fine since I am only dripping. Taking out particulate matter will have to extend your carbon filter life since carbon adsorbs (not absorb) so the outside surfaces of carbon will work better if they are not coated in fine particles. Any fine mechanical filter will do and some are very economical.

For my carbon filter, I use a cartridge which I can pack myself. This way I can save money and choose the quality of activated carbon. The longer the "fizz" time when first wet, the more activated the carbon is.
