Say I have a tank that size. I'd like to stock it, but with what? what's a common set-up?.... can it become a saltwater tank from being a FW tank?.... Has anybody had experience with a set up that utilizes the hight of the tank for different species' preference to water elevation, i.e ground to mid to surface dwellers?

Just to name a few questions for this size tank.

Let's put it this way......I have a 1 1/2 year old boy. I'd like to set up a tank that he can remember from his early years, one where the fish wil live for, say ten years or so. When the boy ( and more to follow) can say, "My fish tank has these fish that....." or, "my fish tank at home is sooo kewl", that's the kinda tank i'd like to see in a 20x10x24, 30 g. tall.

i'm very new to hobby, however, i can remember a tank that my bro had on top of our dresser.....I'll post in the 'Lesson's learned' soon on that story ! It always had me wanting to set up a tank....

Many fish options... I would do a reg. community if it is for your kid. If it was me I would do some shellies and a couple mid-water dithers.

Id stick to FW if I were you, easier for a beginner I think. There are lots of combos - the most important thing is look around this site and others for information on how to properly cycle your tank, how to pick out adequate filtration, keep an eye on the important things like pH, temperature, nitrites, nitrates, dont overfeed, and keep up with the water changes. Its good that you are looking first - most people, including myself, often buy and then look. Youll find the right combo and the right stocking limit for your tank if you look around the internet.

Even if you've been a freshwater hobbyist for awhile, a saltwater tank takes alot more time and mistakes will be alot more expensive. My brother has saltwater tanks. 2 are 100 gallons. He also has a small 8gallon tank and the small tanks are called nanos. With the large tanks, there's alot more leeway before you make a costly mistake. But the smaller tank takes alot more work because just a little mistake can wipe out your whole tank. For a 30gallon tanks I would stick with freshwater. There are alot of interesting freshwater fish and mistakes won't wipe out your wallet. Good luck, The Doctor.

I remember when I was a kid, there was a 20 gallon with guppies in my living room. I thought it was cool as hell, got to witness them reproducing also. a breeding pair of convicts would be pretty cool, too.

You all are very helpful, thank you! I currently have a 30 long with (only temporary) two Firemouths. They are both still juvenile. In fact Pops and I are heading to 'That Fish Place' (for I am still in PA) to change the current set-up. 'I have an inexpensive way to help the two little buggers out' he said when I woke up. I like the idea of having a pair of mild manored cichlids and a few other species. I'll keep my eye open in this site as to what I like. thanx again, fellas
